I wouldn't rule them out as 'just insane'; there's not a lot of logic to this place, and they do some pretty crazy things for no apparent reason, but they're obviously powerful and deciding they don't know what they're thinking could be dangerous. I mean it's possible, but I'd still doubt it's something so simple.
